Shimis respecting the registration and protection in China

of British subjects of Chinese origin.

In the draft exchange of notes submitted by His Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires at Peking, a copy of which was enclosed in the letter from this department T 5905/2265/378 of the 7th of July last it is expressly provided that all registrations effected prior to 1925 shall remain valid, whatever the grounds on which the registered person bases his claim to British nationality.

3. Mr. Chamberlain understands that any Chinese British subject who values his British nationality, and has good reasons for visiting China and goes there habitually, is sure to have registered; and it is evident that after the passage of a decade or so, the . majority of British subjects of Chinese origin, will fall within the categories covered by paragraph 4 (b) and (c) of his despatch No.30 of the 15th January last to His jesty's Minister at Peking (a copy of which was forwarded to your department in the letter from this department T 10070/3260/378 of January 22nd).
